The journey to the IPL final is never a fluke. In 2021, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finished last, followed by an eighth-place finish in 2022, and another last-place finish in 2023. Similarly, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) placed seventh in both the previous two seasons. This year, SRH broke auction records to sign an overseas fast bowler, unproven in the IPL, and made him their captain. In response, KKR surpassed SRH's record bid for a fast bowler who hadn’t played in the league since 2015. Both moves, which restricted the teams' ability to make other significant acquisitions, were widely criticized. Consequently, neither team was initially considered a favorite for the final in Chennai on May 26.
However, both KKR and SRH have defied expectations by playing remarkable cricket. They have outscored every team in IPL history this season. After the first two games produced standard totals, KKR and SRH set the tone with an explosive clash at Eden Gardens and maintained their aggressive approach throughout the season. This aggressive style forced other teams to elevate their game, and those unable to keep up were left behind.
KKR, champions in 2012 and 2014, and SRH, winners in 2016, have spearheaded a batting revolution in IPL 2024. Their resurgence this season, after recent struggles, underscores their determination and tactical acumen. As a result, it is fitting that one of these teams will emerge as the champion on Sunday, adding another title to their history.
